What’s Love got to do with it?

charlie chaplinAs I wrote that title I envisioned Tina Turner belting out her song by the same name, loud and proud! Ā So let me ask you – what does that song by Tina Turner and Charlie Chaplin have to do with Love? Ā Stick with me and let’s go find out. Ā

With it being Valentine’s Day I thought I would turn my hand to writing about love. Ā Ahhhh, Love. Ā The emotion that can make sane people crazy, and those without it feel lost. Ā

ā€œSanskrit has 96 words for love; ancient Persian has 80, Greek three, and English only one. This is indicative of the poverty of awareness or emphasis that we give to that tremendously important realm of feeling. Eskimos have 30 words for snow, because it is a life-and-death matter to them to have exact information about the element they live with so intimately. If we had a vocabulary of 30 words for love … we would immediately be richer and more intelligent in this human element so close to our heart. An Eskimo probably would die of clumsiness if he had only one word for snow; we are close to dying of loneliness because we have only one word for love. Of all the Western languages, English may be the most lacking when it comes to feeling.ā€ – Robert Johnson, The Fisher King and the Handless Maiden

It’s so true. Ā The I love you that I say to my kids as I hug them or push back the hair from their foreheads as I kiss them goodnight is very different to the I love you that I tell my gorgeous furry friends as I pet them. Ā The I love you that I say to my soul sisters, who have watched me go to pieces, picked me up and dusted me off, Ā is very different to the I love you that I say to my elderly mother who forgets that we have talked. Ā All of these are gorgeous and I feel blessed, but more importantly is the I love you that I say to myself. Ā Isn’t it selfish to love yourself, shouldn’t you come last on the list and everyone and everything before you? Ā Hell No! Ā

I spent many years not loving myself as I had been indoctrinated by my mother not to and I had fully bought into the story that to do so was narcissistic, selfish, ego centric – this in turn led to making some bad choices in relationships, allowing others to define my worth, allowing others and myself to diminish and hurt me and saying things to myself that I would NEVER say to another human being as they were too cruel, unkind and vile. Thankfully, I have learned differently, I have learned that first and foremost it is vital (yes, I did use that word) to love myself. Ā As the more I love myself the more I can love, help, support and serve others and really show up as ME. Ā

Think of it this way if you will – a piggy bank. Ā There sits an empty piggy bank and daily you start to drop your change into it, now this change doesn’t come in coin form, it comes in gratitude, appreciation, valuing your effort, saying kind things to yourself, kicking the frigging gremlins out of your head or giving them a different project to do to occupy them. Ā Soon your piggy bank is overflowing and you feel frigging amazing. Ā Situations can happen but you realise that yup, that situation may have sucked, you may have messed up but you are still worthy, loveable and valued. Ā You no longer offer yourself up as the victim or the sacrificial lamb for others or your own inner critics to punt around. Ā Instead you own it, learn from it (and sometime in the future will laugh about it) and release it. Ā

So as I was thrilled to come across this poem by Charlie Chaplin. Ā Now if you don’t know who Charlie Chaplin was Ā Ā he was born in 1889 and was a silent film actor/comedian from about 1920 to 1950 and he was iconic for his mustache and his bowler hat. Ā He died 40 years ago. Ā Now this poem really speaks to what self love is and what it isn’t. Ā

As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is ā€œAUTHENTICITYā€.

As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody if I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it ā€œRESPECTā€.

As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it ā€œMATURITYā€.

As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm. Today I call it ā€œSELF-CONFIDENCEā€.

As I began to love myself I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm. Today I call it ā€œSIMPLICITYā€.

As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today I know it is ā€œLOVE OF ONESELFā€.

As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is ā€œMODESTYā€.

As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worrying about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where everything is happening. Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it ā€œFULFILLMENTā€.

As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection ā€œWISDOM OF THE HEARTā€.

We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today I know ā€œTHAT IS LIFEā€!ā€

Wishing you a fabulous Valentine’s Day and please remember to do something nice for yourself every day, as you are the only you there is.

Here we go loves, tomorrow brings our once-in-a-bl Here we go loves, tomorrow brings our once-in-a-blue-moon moment. šŸŒ•šŸ©µ

This Sagittarius full blue moon is bringing a cosmic green light for growth, expansion and taking the leap into the known (and unknown).

It’s here to free you from the confines of your comfort zone, illuminate the beliefs and fears that have kept you small, and call you towards the fullest and truest expansion of yourself.

You may already be feeling the restlessness building. A feeling that something needs to change. That you’ve outgrown certain parts of your life, limiting thoughts, old stories or ways of being that no longer fit the version of you you’re becoming.

This moon wants you to stop waiting for some imaginary future and begin taking steps towards the life your heart and soul truly yearn for now.

You’ll know deep down where you’re being called to go and what you’re being called to do and yes, it may feel big. But your soul wouldn’t call you into it if you weren’t ready.

This is your once-in-a-blue-moon moment to believe in yourself, stretch beyond what feels comfortable, trust your path and take the leap.

Just like the Sagittarius archer, draw back your bow, take aim for what you want and go for it.

The Taurus new moon is a powerful reminder that we The Taurus new moon is a powerful reminder that we cannot hear the guidance or receive and anchor in the new energies and frequencies coming in when we are in a state of dysregulation or high alert.

The world is getting quicker and louder, and many of us are being pulled in too many different directions by too many different demands on our time, energy and attention, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, overloaded and agitated.

This moon is asking us to consciously slow down, unplug from the noise of the outside world and take back our attention from anywhere it’s scattered. Because when our attention is scattered, our power and awareness leak, making it easier to feel lost, uncertain and disconnected from ourselves.

This moon is asking us to root deeply into ourselves, regulate our nervous systems and reconnect to our own wisdom, because only from a grounded and rooted place can we truly receive and anchor in the new frequencies and possibilities trying to come through.

How are you being called to slow down and reconnect to yourself under this moon?

Tiny flower cups for the bees because the fountain Tiny flower cups for the bees because the fountain water was too strong and some were drowning. šŸ„ŗšŸ

Without bees we have nothing.
No flowers.
No food.
No Spring magic.

So this is your reminder to leave water out, plant flowers and protect the tiny wild things. They are holding the world together. 🌼✨

We’re taught early what it means to be a ā€œgoodā€ wo We’re taught early what it means to be a ā€œgoodā€ woman.
.
.
Be nice and agreeable. Don’t make people uncomfortable...even if it means you are.
.
.
We learn to shrink ourselves to keep the peace. To smile when something feels off. To choose politeness over protection.
.
.
But here’s the thing… that version of ā€œnatureā€ we’re told to follow? It’s not reality.
.
.
Look at females in the wild. They protect their territory. They defend their young. They set boundaries without apology. They don’t soften themselves to make others comfortable. They survive because they don’t ignore their instincts....Somewhere along the way, we were taught to override ours.
.
.
Being kind is not the same as being compliant. Being compassionate does not require self-abandonment... And your discomfort is not something you owe the world.
.
.
You are allowed to take up space, say no and choose yourself.
.
.
That’s not unnatural....That’s instinct.
Bealtaine blessings! šŸŒøšŸŒæšŸ§ššŸ¼ In the Celtic lands, the Bealtaine blessings! šŸŒøšŸŒæšŸ§ššŸ¼ In the Celtic lands, the ancient festival of Bealtaine marks the start of the summer season.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Traditionally Bealtaine did not have a fixed date, though it has come to be celebrated by many in modern times on the first of May (and here in Ireland, this week has indeed very much felt like our first glimpse of summer).⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
At this time of year we celebrate the greening, fertility, and abundance of the natural world. The land is bursting with life all around us, renewed from the long sleep of winter.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Much like the festival of Samhain, which sits opposite from Bealtaine on the ever-turning wheel of the year, this is a liminal time when the veil between our physical realm and the spiritual Otherworld thins.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It is said here in Ireland that the SĆdhe, the fairy folk, are more likely pass through the fairy forts, ancient burial mounds, and other ā€œthin placesā€ at this time of year (and folks who wander near these places may likewise find themselves wandering into the Otherworld).⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Many of the rituals performed during this festival are protective in nature.⁣ Perhaps the most time-honored of these rites is the Bealtaine bonfire šŸ”„ ⁣If you are unable to light a large fire, candle magic is a good option as well.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This energy makes Bealtaine a potent time for spirit work, hedge crossing (i.e. trance journeying), and divination. ⁣Similarly, you may have noticed your dreams becoming more vivid, or you might even experience prophetic or lucid dreams. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣
In my own practice, getting out onto the land to connect with the local spirits is one of the most important aspects of this day.⁣ I gather herbs and flowers, have a picnic, sing, dance, and share offerings with the local spirits of place šŸŒ€
