4 Easy Rituals to Celebrate Beltane – and a Visualisation!

Jenny Heston · 1:11 am ·

I love Beltane, I love it because it is fiery, passionate, intentional and produces results! Ā

Beltane was thought to be one of the more important festivals of the Gaelic calendar. Ā Beltane is a Fire Festival. The word ‘Beltane’ originates from the Celtic God ‘Bel’, meaning ‘the bright one’ and the Gaelic word ‘teine’ meaning fire. Together they make ‘Bright Fire’, or ‘Goodly Fire’ and traditionally bonfires were lit to honour the Sun and encourage the support of Bel and the Sun’s light to nurture the emerging future harvest and protect the community.

Beltane celebrates the height of Spring and the flowering of life. Earth energies are at their strongest and most active. Ā All of life is bursting with potent fertility, look at the trees around you – (if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere), they are bursting forth with bright green leaves and the little sparrows are back as well as the robins. Ā Abundant fertility, on all levels, is the central theme.

The Goddess has reached her fullness and is the manifestation of growth and renewal and shows up as the May Queen, Flora, the Goddess of Spring. The God emerges as the Young Oak, May King Ā or as Jack in the Green. They fall in love, the union is consummated and the May Queen becomes pregnant. Together the May Queen and the May King are symbols of the Sacred Marriage, the union of Earth and Sky. Ā If you have ever read ā€œThe Mists of Avalonā€ you will know what I am talking about. ā€œThis is the night of the Greenwood Marriage. It is about sexuality and sensuality, passion, vitality and joy. And about conception. A brilliant moment in the Wheel of the Year to bring ideas, hopes and dreams into action. And have some fun!ā€

On BeltaneĀ we honor nature’s oldest love story. Beltane means bright fire, and in earth-based traditions, it represents the handfasting, or marriage, of the God and Goddess and their eternal embrace. In ancient lore, the two are separated all winter long, and their reunion on Beltane is celebrated with food, drink, and multi-colored maypoles, which symbolize female energies wrapping themselves around the male form. The world comes alive in color to celebrate their love. This is a holiday of union, a celebration of the divine balance in the union of masculine and feminine. Having reached maturity through their long separation, Lord and Lady now come together as one.

Have you ever seen a Maypole dance? Ā If you have never seen a proper Maypole dance done, I highly recommend it! Ā A phallic pole, often made from Birch (why Birch you ask – Ā Birch is regarded as a feminine tree and Deities associated with Birch are mostly love and fertility goddesses. It is one of the first trees to show its leaf in Spring), was inserted into the Earth representing the potency of the God. At the top there would be a glorious wreath, most often Hawthorn flowers and the flowers represented the Goddess. Ā Hawthorn is a deeply magical tree and is one of the three trees at the heart of the Celtic Tree Alphabet, the Faery Triad, ‘by Oak, Ash and Thorn’. Traditionally Beltane began when the Hawthorn, the May, blossomed. It is the tree of sexuality and fertility and is the classic flower to decorate a Maypole with.

The dance around the Maypole represented Their unity. Ā Ribbons of Green, White and Red hung down from the top of the pole and each young woman would take an end and dance. Ā As they danced around the pole they would weave in and out and through whilst holding onto their gorgeous ribbon. This weaving represented the Spiral of Life and the union between the God and the Goddess. Ā It’s moving artistry and glorious fun!

So if you haven’t gotten it yet, Beltane is a festival of flowers, fertility, sensuality, and delight. Ā The Beltane fires of yore were a time of revelry, pairing and celebrating fertility (there were lots of babies born 9 months after the celebrations!) Ā Also, cattle would be led between two fires for protection and to encourage a strong, fertile herd. People believed the smoke and the ashes from the Beltane fires offered protection and fertility. Ā Holy wells were visited and feasts were had. Rowan was often used in Beltane festivals as it’s a tree of protection and healing. Branches of Rowan were placed as protection over the doors of houses and barns at Beltane to protect from increased Faery activity as they woke from their winter slumber. Sprigs were worn for protection also. Rowan berries have a tiny five-pointed star on the bottom reminiscent of the pentagram.

So all in all a great time to celebrate, set intention, fertilise either self or ideas and have a grand jolly time! Ā

But I guess the question some people have is – ā€œWhy bother marking the day?ā€ Ā Good question, and my answer would be because it connects you to something bigger, older and deeper than our modern day to day. Ā

I love the way Donna Henes puts it:- Ā Ceremonial observance adds lucid layers — depth, dimension, drama and distinction — to our lives, making the ordinary seem special, and the special, extraordinary. Through the practice of ritual we are privileged to experience ourselves as prepared, present, passionate, principled and potent. When we set aside the quality time and claim the psychic space for ceremony, when we assume the authority to do so, we are able to transform our perceptions, our perspectives, our experiences, and in the process, our reality.

Does ritual have to be long, drawn out, complicated and require a shed ton of things you don’t have in your home? Ā Some people believe so, but I don’t. To me ritual is performed when I make food for those I love with the intention of it being nourishing and a dish of connection. Ā It’s also in when I routinely smudge and energetically cleanse my home, or in the Epsom salt tub that I draw up for one of the boys with the oils that will help them.

So with all that being said let’s go explore 3 simple rituals for Beltane. Ā The first one is the egg charm (and I most certainly do this at Easter) and it is so easy to do. Ā The second is a tree blessing, which I love and will be doing. There’s also a very simple dandelion renewal ritual – if spring has sprung early enough for you.Ā  And a glorious fun thing to do is a Faery offering!Ā

Here is a lovely guided visualisation/meditation to help you really release and tap into this amazing time.Ā  Enjoy!

Here we go loves, tomorrow brings our once-in-a-bl Here we go loves, tomorrow brings our once-in-a-blue-moon moment. šŸŒ•šŸ©µ

This Sagittarius full blue moon is bringing a cosmic green light for growth, expansion and taking the leap into the known (and unknown).

It’s here to free you from the confines of your comfort zone, illuminate the beliefs and fears that have kept you small, and call you towards the fullest and truest expansion of yourself.

You may already be feeling the restlessness building. A feeling that something needs to change. That you’ve outgrown certain parts of your life, limiting thoughts, old stories or ways of being that no longer fit the version of you you’re becoming.

This moon wants you to stop waiting for some imaginary future and begin taking steps towards the life your heart and soul truly yearn for now.

You’ll know deep down where you’re being called to go and what you’re being called to do and yes, it may feel big. But your soul wouldn’t call you into it if you weren’t ready.

This is your once-in-a-blue-moon moment to believe in yourself, stretch beyond what feels comfortable, trust your path and take the leap.

Just like the Sagittarius archer, draw back your bow, take aim for what you want and go for it.

The Taurus new moon is a powerful reminder that we The Taurus new moon is a powerful reminder that we cannot hear the guidance or receive and anchor in the new energies and frequencies coming in when we are in a state of dysregulation or high alert.

The world is getting quicker and louder, and many of us are being pulled in too many different directions by too many different demands on our time, energy and attention, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, overloaded and agitated.

This moon is asking us to consciously slow down, unplug from the noise of the outside world and take back our attention from anywhere it’s scattered. Because when our attention is scattered, our power and awareness leak, making it easier to feel lost, uncertain and disconnected from ourselves.

This moon is asking us to root deeply into ourselves, regulate our nervous systems and reconnect to our own wisdom, because only from a grounded and rooted place can we truly receive and anchor in the new frequencies and possibilities trying to come through.

How are you being called to slow down and reconnect to yourself under this moon?

We’re taught early what it means to be a ā€œgoodā€ wo We’re taught early what it means to be a ā€œgoodā€ woman.
.
.
Be nice and agreeable. Don’t make people uncomfortable...even if it means you are.
.
.
We learn to shrink ourselves to keep the peace. To smile when something feels off. To choose politeness over protection.
.
.
But here’s the thing… that version of ā€œnatureā€ we’re told to follow? It’s not reality.
.
.
Look at females in the wild. They protect their territory. They defend their young. They set boundaries without apology. They don’t soften themselves to make others comfortable. They survive because they don’t ignore their instincts....Somewhere along the way, we were taught to override ours.
.
.
Being kind is not the same as being compliant. Being compassionate does not require self-abandonment... And your discomfort is not something you owe the world.
.
.
You are allowed to take up space, say no and choose yourself.
.
.
That’s not unnatural....That’s instinct.
Bealtaine blessings! šŸŒøšŸŒæšŸ§ššŸ¼ In the Celtic lands, the Bealtaine blessings! šŸŒøšŸŒæšŸ§ššŸ¼ In the Celtic lands, the ancient festival of Bealtaine marks the start of the summer season.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Traditionally Bealtaine did not have a fixed date, though it has come to be celebrated by many in modern times on the first of May (and here in Ireland, this week has indeed very much felt like our first glimpse of summer).⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
At this time of year we celebrate the greening, fertility, and abundance of the natural world. The land is bursting with life all around us, renewed from the long sleep of winter.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Much like the festival of Samhain, which sits opposite from Bealtaine on the ever-turning wheel of the year, this is a liminal time when the veil between our physical realm and the spiritual Otherworld thins.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It is said here in Ireland that the SĆdhe, the fairy folk, are more likely pass through the fairy forts, ancient burial mounds, and other ā€œthin placesā€ at this time of year (and folks who wander near these places may likewise find themselves wandering into the Otherworld).⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Many of the rituals performed during this festival are protective in nature.⁣ Perhaps the most time-honored of these rites is the Bealtaine bonfire šŸ”„ ⁣If you are unable to light a large fire, candle magic is a good option as well.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This energy makes Bealtaine a potent time for spirit work, hedge crossing (i.e. trance journeying), and divination. ⁣Similarly, you may have noticed your dreams becoming more vivid, or you might even experience prophetic or lucid dreams. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣
In my own practice, getting out onto the land to connect with the local spirits is one of the most important aspects of this day.⁣ I gather herbs and flowers, have a picnic, sing, dance, and share offerings with the local spirits of place šŸŒ€
