The Yule Faeries – A Winter Solstice Story.

Jenny Heston · 3:33 pm ·

Once upon a time, (as that’s how all good stories start), a long time ago there was a wee group of tiny Faeries.

This group of little Faeries huddled in their home deep under the roots of a giant oak tree. They were safe and snug in their tiny underground cave lined with dandelion fluff, bird feathers, and dried moss.

Outside, the wind blew cold and the snow fell softly down to cover the ground. “I saw the Sun King today,” the faerie named Rose said as she pulled her mossy cloak tighter about her. “He looked so old and tired as he walked off through the forest. What is wrong with him?

“The great oak said he’s dying” answered Daffodil.

“Dying? Oh, what will we do now?” Little Meadow Grass started to cry, “If the Sun King dies, our little plant friends will not grow. The Birds will not come and sing again. Everything will be winter forever!” Lilac, Dandelion and Elder Blossom tried to comfort their friend, but they were all very sad. As they huddled together, there was a knock on the tiny door.

“Open up, Faeries,” called out a loud voice. “Why are you hiding instead of joining us in our Solstice celebration?” Rose opened the door and the little gnome Brown Knobby pushed inside, shaking the glistening snowflakes off his brown coat and hat.

“We are too sad to celebrate,” Daffodil said wiping her eyes, “The Sun King is dying, haven’t you heard?”

“He is dead, you silly Faeries.” Brown Knobby’s round dark eyes sparkled with laughter. “Now hurry, or we’ll be late for the celebration!”

“How can you be happy and laugh?!” Elder Blossom stamped her little foot and frowned at the gnome. “If the Sun King IS dead, it will always be winter. We will never see the Sun again!”

“Silly little child-Faeries.” Brown Knobby grabbed Dandelion by the hand and pulled her to her feet. “There is a secret to the Winter Solstice. Don’t you want to know what it is?”

The Faeries looked at him in surprise. “Secret?” they all said. “What secret? We are only new little Faeries, you silly gnome. We’ve never been to a Solstice celebration before.”

“Come and see. Come and see. Get your capes and come with me.” Brown Knobby danced and jigged around the room. “Hurry, Hurry, don’t be slow! To the Sacred Oak Grove through the snow!” He danced out of the door and disappeared.

“What did that gnome mean?” Rose asked as she gathered up her cloak of dried rose petals held together with cobwebs and lined with goose down.

“I don’t know, but the Lady lives in the Sacred Grove.” Meadow Grass pulled on her hat.

“Perhaps if we go to see the Goddess, She can explain what Brown Knobby was talking about”.

The Faeries left their snug little home and trudged off through the snow toward the sacred oak grove. The forest was dark with only the light of the Moon shining down through the thick fir branches and bare limbs of maple and hawthorn. It was very difficult for them to get through the snow because they were very, very small. As they waded through the wet snow and shivered in the cold wind, they met a fox.

“Where are you going, Faeries?” the fox asked.

“To the sacred grove,” they answered, they were cold and shivering.

“Climb on my back and I will take you there swiftly.”

The fox knelt down so the Faeries could climb up. Then he raced off through the dark.

“Listen!” Lilac said as they neared the Grove of Sacred trees. “Someone is singing happy songs. A LOT of someones.”

The beautiful music carried over the cold, still, moonlit air. It was the most beautiful music the Faeries had ever heard. The fox carried the Faeries right to the edge of the stone altar in the center of the grove, then knelt down.

“Look!” said Elder Blossom as they slid to the snow covered ground. “There is the Maiden and the Mother and the OLD Wise Crone, and many other Little People.”

“They are all smiling and happy,” said Lilac as she looked around at all the creatures.

“All the animals are here too,” whispered Dandelion. “Why are they all looking at the Mother?”

The Faeries moved closer to the three Ladies seated on the altar stone. The Mother held a bundle close in Her arms, smiling down at it. The Maiden reached down and took the Faeries gently in her Hands. She held them close to the Mother so they could see what She held.

“A Baby!” the Faeries cried. ” A new little Baby! Look how he glows!”

“He is the newborn Sun King,” said the Maiden, smiling.

“But Brown Knobby and the old oak tree said the Sun King was dead,” the Faeries answered her. “How can this little baby be the Sun King?”

“That is the great secret of the Winter Solstice.” The Old Wise One touched the baby’s cheek with her wrinkled hand. “Every year the Sun King must come to the sacred grove during the darkest days of winter where he dies. I take his spirit to the Mother who gives him new life again. This is the way for all creatures, not just the Sun King.”

” You mean everything lives and dies and lives again? The Faeries looked down in wonder at the baby Sun King, nestled in the arms of the Mother.

” Yes, Little Ones,” answered the Old Wise Crone. “There is never an end to life. This is the great mystical secret of the Winter Solstice.”

The Faeries laughed because they were so happy.

“I think the little Sun King should have gifts,” said Rose. “I will show him where the wild roses bloom in the early summer.”

“And, I will teach him to call the birds and listen to the songs of the wind,” exclaimed Dandelion.

“When he is older and stronger, ” said the Mother, “then the flowers will bloom at his touch, the birds will return to sing their songs, and the air will be warm from his breath, and winter will be gone for a time. Then the Sun King will run and play with you in the forest.”

The little Faeries sang to the Baby Sun King, songs of the coming spring, the sweet smelling flowers, the bumbling bees, and all the secrets of the forest. And all the creatures within the sacred grove sang with them. Then the fox took them back to their snug home under the roots of the giant oak tree where they dreamed wonderful dreams, waiting for the warmth of spring and the fun they would have with the little Sun King.

Cold Moon Forgiveness Ritual.

Jenny Heston · 4:44 am ·

“Forgiveness is not a feeling; it is a commitment. It is a choice to show mercy, not to hold the offence up against the offender. Forgiveness is an expression of love.”

One of the most powerful things we can do for ourselves is to Forgive.

Cold Moon Forgiveness Ritual

Part of releasing any lingering negative energy from this year is practicing forgiveness. This can be difficult if you’ve not been given an apology.

However, it’s essential to your emotional well-being to find a way to move on from this pain.

This anger can weigh you down and fill you with resentment. Life is too short to spend your days filled with that bitterness.

You may need to forgive yourself as well. Do you cringe at how you acted or something you said in the past? This can be a small act or one so large you find yourself unable to move forward.

Remember the words of Maya Angelou, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Do not leave space for shame, anxiety, doubt, or unproductive thoughts.

Practicing this forgiveness ritual under December’s Full Cold Moon is a beautiful way to close the year and start fresh for the next.

If you feel inclined, light a candle.

Spend time sitting quietly, focusing on your pain with your eyes closed. Once you feel ready, imagine a butterfly floating toward you.

You reach out towards it and lift your hand so it can land on your fingertip. Allow the butterfly to take your frustrations from you and notice it leaving your body.

As the butterfly flies away, feel your resentment and pain going with it.

Spend a few more moments enjoying the lightness and joy filling your heart.

And if you can get outside and see the moon, perfect. If not, that’s totally okay as well.

It’s the Intention.

December Cold Moon Journal Prompts

Jenny Heston · 3:33 pm ·

December’s long dark nights and cold frigid days bring the Moon’s annual cycle full circle.

The Cold Moon’s  spiritual meaning indicates now is an ideal time to start visualising what you want to bring into your life. (Which ties in for the energy of this month of Get Inspired).

Once 2022’s Full Moon of December arrives, we’ve completed an entire trip around the sun. Now is a beautiful moment to focus on all the good things headed your way!

You’ve been working so hard and have some serious gumption, trust that the universe will help bring your intentions and dreams to fruition. The Cold Moon encourages you to follow your greatest passions and spiritual joys.

Cold Moon Spiritual Journal Prompts

  • Create a to-do list for this Winter holiday that captures your inner child. What would you like to do to bring more holiday magic to the season?
  • How do you avoid shallow consumerism this time of year and connect to the magic of nature and spirit instead?
  • What obstacles in your life can you start viewing as opportunities?
  • The main spiritual focus during Winter Solstice is honoring the afterlife, celebrating the slow return of the sun, and banishing negative energy. How can you incorporate this into your life right now?
  • Write about a moment this last year that made you feel stronger and what actions you wanted to take after.

Then when you have taken the time with the prompts and breathed into them, try the Forgiveness Ritual.

Spiritual Meaning of the Hunter’s Moon

Jenny Heston · 7:20 am ·

On October 9th we welcome the Hunter’s Moon.

This Full Moon marks the end of the Harvest season and is rich in ancestral magick.

It is a time to start really connecting with your heritage, your ancestors and looking at what they have given you.  It’s also a delicious time of releasing your own old stuff.

If you are new to working with Full Moon energy, there is fabulous information on all the aspects of it right here.

Remember that at Full Moon it is time to Release your energy, as the Full Moon marks the end of a cycle, and the Moon begins to grow dark, again.

The Hunter’s Moon derives its name from the hunting that takes place this time of year. Now is the season of the rut for Deer and Elk (mating season), and game are currently well-nourished.

October’s moon brings the season of the hunt, preservation, and preparation for the icy cold days and nights to come.

The Hunter’s Moon is focused on internal work and self-reflection. We now begin the dark half of the year; accept and welcome the darkness with open arms and spirit. It’s a time of transition, divination, and balance.

Take a moment to look back in history at your ancestors and the lessons they can teach you. Before industrialism, people focused on harvesting and preparing for the coming of Winter. Failure to do so meant facing one’s own death or mortality.

You can feel the magical energy in the air right now as we head toward Samhain, and the veil grows thin. This increases your ability to communicate with your ancestors or loved ones. It’s an opportunity for spiritual growth, goal setting, gratitude, and finding ways to slow down and enjoy the season of Autumn.

So let’s explore a delicious ritual and some journal prompts to support you in deepening into the release and the magick of this moon.

Mandala Hunter’s Moon Ritual

Jenny Heston · 10:10 am ·

Mandala Hunter’s Moon Ritual

In honour of the Autumn trees that are showing us how to let things go (by losing their leaves) that is what we are going to be doing.

Gather together the following:-

  • Your moon journal and your favourite pen
  • A candle
  • I’m Allowing song
  • A collection of leaves, acorns, pinecones, flowers etc.

Once you have all your things together, find a space where you can spend some time without being interrupted or distracted.

The most important thing you need to know about the power of the full moon ritual is that it utilises four essential elements of any transformative spiritual practice: willpower, intention, symbolism, and ritual.

Grab your moon journal and ask yourself the following questions:

Full Hunter Moon Journal Prompts

  • What do you know about your ancestors, heritage, and family tree? What would you like to learn more about?
  • Create a mini bucket list and include how you’d like to celebrate October, Samhain, and Halloween.
  • What lessons do you think your ancestors would want you to have learned?
  • What were some “seeds” that you planted this last Spring and Summer? How did you help them to grow over the last few months? Are you able to reap the rewards of what you have sewn? What could you have done differently? How can you do better next year?
  • Imagine you’re in the last stages of your life. What memories do you hope to have? What values and stories do you hope are told about you when you’re gone?

Now is the time to create your release mandala.

The mandala can be made out of leaves, sticks, pine cones, acorns, whatever you can find.  And making a mandala as a collective (involving friends or family) can open up a lovely space to talk on a deeper level.

I personally love to make my mandala outdoors, either in the garden, a park, at the beach as this allows it to be blown away on the breeze or washed away by the waves.

Let’s begin.

Light your candle and pop on the Allowing song (I highly suggest looping it).

Start placing your leaves in a design that resonate for you.  As you put each leaf down, offer up what you are releasing.  It could be “I am releasing anxiety”, “I am releasing feeling disconnected to my higher self”.

Make your mandala with intention and awareness.

When your mandala is complete take a moment to check in with how you are feeling physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.  Note this down in your moon journal.

Then offer up a blessing and a prayer of gratitude that your mandala will be received as a gift by the earth and your releases will dance on the breeze and become cosmic compost.

Blow your candle out and take a nice sip of tea.

Happy Full Moon.
